What do you understand about Ofqual and its role?

What the interviewer is testing: Tests regulatory awareness.

Key terms: Ofqual, regulation, compliance, Conditions of Recognition

Strong Answer

Ofqual is the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, the independent regulator for qualifications, examinations, and assessments in England. Under the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009, Ofqual has statutory objectives to ensure qualifications are valid, reliable, comparable, and fair. They set Conditions of Recognition that awarding organisations must meet. These conditions cover assessment design, delivery, marking, standardisation, and quality assurance. As an assessment developer, I need to understand the conditions that apply to my work, particularly around validity, reliability, and the requirement for assessments to effectively differentiate between levels of attainment.

Weak Answer (Avoid)

Ofqual makes the rules and we have to follow them.

Likely follow-up: If Ofqual raised a concern about an assessment, how would you respond?
